READ ALOUD TO A CHILD WEEK

POCKETS FULL of POETRY
Dear Parents and Educators:
The Virginia General Assembly has designated the THIRD week of October as READ ALOUD to a CHILD WEEK throughout the Commonwealth. This year’s theme is POCKETS FULL of POETRY.
Reading aloud is one of the most effective techniques that parents can use to positively impact their children’s success in school and in life. Some benefits of reading aloud are increased vocabulary, language comprehension, listening skills, creativity, and the imagination.
In addition, reading aloud builds strong parent-child bonds that last a lifetime! Parent role models help children associate reading with pleasure! Children look forward to learning how to read. Your children will pass this joy to their children and literacy in Virginia will flourish!
If nightly 20 MINUTE reading schedules are too hectic during the week, twenty-minute sessions spread over the weekend for up to 2 hours will work fine. Or,
you may choose to listen and discuss a book on tape together.
